A ‘gigantic’ hearth has erupted on a boatyard close to the River Thames and despatched plumes of smoke over southwest London as locals are warned to shut their home windows. 

Witnesses reported listening to explosions after a hearth engulfed an industrial unit on Platt’s Eyot, an island on the River Thames, close to Hampton, London, in the present day.

These residing close by had been warned to shut their home windows after the blaze erupted on the Hampton Boat Sheds at round 5.14pm, with pillars of smoke seen throughout south west London.

Locals have urged the course of robust winds saved a listed residential constructing on the island, with experiences claiming residents had rushed in to avoid wasting boats moored close by.

The London Hearth Brigade confirmed ‘some cyllinders’ had been concerned within the blaze.

It advised MyLondon: ‘The Brigade had been known as at 5.14pm to experiences of a fireplace by Decrease Sunbury Street. An industrial unit on Platt’s eyot is alight.

They later added the blaze was blowing within the course of a ‘handful of small boats’, together with a ship used within the 2017 Christopher Nolan movie Dunkirk.
